MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF OLD TREES IN HAZARIBAGH in The International Year of The Forest -2011

Trucks loading felled trees: this sight can bring tears to one's eyes

The widening of the NH 33 in to a 4-lane highway by NHAI has prompted authorities to demolish old trees on the either side of the road from Barhi to Ranchi (see the snaps) and beyond.

It is  ironical and at the same time shameful  that this year of 2011 has been declared as "The International Year of the Forest"

These trees were perhaps even more than a hundred years of age. They have been felled in hundreds. These trees were mostly the indigenous kind as peepul, mango, wat, jamun etc . They were huge in size with large girths and authorities had hard time to fell them. They provided shade and a dash of beauty to the virgin landscape of our beautiful Jharkhand.  These trees were also home to numerous birds and squirrels .

These were undoubtedly heritage trees of our state and their destruction was not explained to the common man, the trees lovers and to the ones who love nature.

In times of such grave global warming when Hazaribagh had missed the rains completely last year, there is no drinking water for the common man, such a disastrous act is sure to further affect the fragile ecosystem of Hazaribagh.

The lane was certainly essential, no one denies that but was such a devastation necessary?

Could these trees not been dug out applying anesthesia and planted elsewhere?

Or some more planning may be was required. Possibly suggestions from the public or from some advanced countries with some newer technologies could have surely helped, perhaps. Something..... Anything... to avoid this.....

I am told trees ARE being planted, but how long would it be till these newly planted  trees are grown to the sizes they had demolished?

And what trees are these, no Gulmohars, please. The trees should provide shade, serve the purpose of the common man and even of the birds who need to make these trees their habitats.

  4. sir,
i heard on phone frm dad that such development and encroachment is taking place in h.bagh .initially i was quite glad to know about 4 lane road and so.But after reading your blog just finding it difficult to choose which side of coin. But on my part I think not that much but still ample qty of tress cold be planted between and on both sides of lanes. And we also have to admit that though it may look inhuman or so but still there is alternative except cuttin them

  5. R.Gupta,
You seem to be a young man. This is the right time for you to grow love, respect and compassion for nature, the landscape and beauty in general, the part they play in every one's lives....

  7. The active participation of the locals of Jharkhand is necessary. A parallel 2 -way would have saved the trees each more than a 100 yrs age and some planted by the Rajas and Moghuls. All the alternatives should have been studied and our MP Yashwant Singh Ji consulted
