THE "JHOOLAS" OF HAZARIBAGH

Subhashis Das

A woman displays her jhoola

If you have been born in in this part of Jharkhand or at least have grown up in here, it cant be that you have missed out on these blouses worn by the village belles in and around Hazaribagh,Telaiya and  Giridih.
No these aren't designer collections from a Rohit Baal, a Sabyasachi Mukherji or a Rina Dhaka wardrobe , these are typical of our own land, they are our own heritage.

These special blouses of our village women are called "Jhoolas". It is not known how this outfit came to be known as this or what is its origin. Taking a guess, the apparel seem to have received a Muslim influence.

A proud village woman donning a splendid Jhoola

Don't these two-toned blouses really look fabulous and exotic ?  Feel proud of them as nowhere else you  would find women wearing such a stunning garment other than in this area of Jharkhand.
It is unfortunate though that such an old attire of our womenfolk ; a relic of our ancient heritage  is fast disappearing.

The leading Hindi daily "Hindustan" on 2.1.2012 does a feature on the Jhoolas of Hazaribagh  from this post of the blog.

Thank you "Hindustan"...

  1. This is an amazing blog, perhaps the best on Hazaribagh. One gets an over view of the entire town from archaeology to Hindu temples and christian churches to birds to even this blouse.

    What content !

By placing the blouse (jhoola) in your blog you have given respect to this unique rural wear of Hazaribagh. good luck
