2010  AUTUMN EQUINOX IN THE MEGALITHS  OF    PUNKREE BURWADIH HAZARIBAGH, INDIA

THE MEGALITHS OF PUNKREE BURWADIH
This year the autumn equinox occurred on the 23 rd Sept.  We arrived at the megaliths a trifle late due to inclement weather, the  crowd which had already congregated to view the sunrise through the two mehirs had become unmanageable. My plea to the onlookers to fall in line behind the meridional stone  which I had named 'A', and view the celestial phenomenon from there,  fell to deaf years. As a result the beautiful sunrise could be devoured only by a handful.

Despite the squally weather a fairly good number of people had gathered to view the equinoctial sunrise.

Punkree Burwadih is the only megalithic site in India where the equinox and the summer solstice sunrise could be seen through the "V" form created by the placement of the menhirs.

It was about ten years ago since the author had discovered the astronomical significance of these megaliths and the purpose of these monuments that they apart from being a burial it also served as an observatory of the transits of the sun, and also that Equinox and summer solstice sunrise viewing must have been a regular feature here in hoary antiquity.
