OLD SKETCHES OF HAZARIBAG

I was able to lay my hands on a few gems; early 18th cent sketches of Hazaribagh. Once you see them you are bound to be bowled over .

For a better view of the images click on them.

Fig 1.The N.E. view of the Mahadeo  (presently known as the BUDHWA MAHADEO) temple sketched by anonymous on 26th Dec 1813.

This Budwa Mahadeo Mandir is an important landmark of our town today. The temple still exists on the field just south of the Mithka Talao.
Note the vicinity; there is hardly any habitat. Compare it with the locality of Budwa Mahadeo today. How time flies...

Fig 2.The Bungalow of Lt. Col.W.R.Gilbert possibly sketched by anonymous around 1813.

Look at the landscape; you can see two hills, the Bawanwey and the Zulzul paharis; therefore the bungalow could have been somewhere near the present day St. Stephens' school or near Hurhuru. Blow up the pic and see the attires of the people and you will find they are on clothings like the ones of Raja Rammohan Roy.

Fig 3. LOTUS TANK by  Anonymous.1825

It is difficult to assess the position of this pond today but judging by the Seotagarha pahadi in the background, the position could be placed somewhere around the mofusil thana. Note also the mosque behind the pond.

Fig 4. Pencil sketch was done by one capt.Robert Smith on Nov 1813.

The above pencil sketch is amazing. You can see the Bawanwey, Seotagarha, Silwar and the kesura paharis . The mosque in the sketch can also be seen in sketch no 3.

  1. While these pictures are exquisite, given the period and the artist - one can see it is a sort of 'airbrushing' of the Indian landscape - almost taming it into the mode of the paintings popular at that time. It is like the artist wants the peace of 'blighty' - a sense that India he is seeing is beautiful, as long as it is from a distance. Of course, it is very interesting as a piece of history. Thanks for sharing.
